Doimukh, Nov 27: The Rajiv Gandhi University Women’s Badminton team secured 3rd position in East Zone Inter-University Badminton Championship, which was held at Nagaland University from November 21-24. With this RGU has qualified for the Khelo India Games and All India Inter University Badminton Championship in which top four teams from each zone will participate. Championship was played on Knock-out cum league basis where fifty university teams from east zone competed for the title. In the run to secure 3rd position, team RGU defeated National Sports University, Manipur, Hemchand Yadav Viswavidyalaya, Chhattisgarh, Ranchi University and Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar Bihar University. This is the first time RGU has qualified for Khelo India Games and All India Inter University Games in team event.
To participate in this tournament, RGU had sent a 5-member team comprising Taku Neha from DNGC, Itanagar, Tayo Rini from Saint Claret College, Ziro, Jomoni Lochung, Osinam Eko and Ingam Potom from Department of Physical Education and Sports Sciences. Dr. Hemantajit Gogoi of Physical Education Department trained the team whereas Dipika Basumatary and Guniya Dele were coach and manager of the team.
