ITANAGAR, Mar 11: Chief Minister Pema Khandu has reiterated that his stance on the Arunachal Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act, 1978 remains unchanged, both in public gatherings and on the floor of the Assembly. Responding to queries raised by several MLAs during the ongoing Budget Session, CM Khandu emphasized that the Act is neither harmful to any religion nor unconstitutional.
He assured that before finalizing the rules for the Act, thorough discussions will be held with all the religious leaders. “A committee comprising representatives from various religious groups will be formed to draft the rules, ensuring wide consultations so that a consensus is reached,” he stated.
The Chief Minister also mentioned that individuals or organizations dissatisfied with the final rules could seek legal recourse by approaching the court. With the six-month deadline set by the court for drafting the rules nearing its end, Khandu said that given Arunachal’s diverse religious and cultural landscape, the government would request the court for an extension.
Earlier, NCP MLAs Toko Tatung and Nikh Kamin, along with NPP MLA Thangwang Wangham, criticized the Act, claiming it may create unrest and division in society and urged the state government to find an amicable solution to the issue.
