ITANAGAR, July 25: In a notable development in the pursuit of justice, the Women Police Station Itanagar has apprehended Nitai Roy, a man who had been evading law enforcement for three years following accusations of the rape of a 12-year-old girl in Labour Colony, RGU Campus in 2021.
The case, recorded as WPS ITA Case No-14/21, falls under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Despite being actively investigated since the incident was reported, Roy successfully eluded capture by frequently changing his whereabouts across Assam and West Bengal.
In January of this year, a specialized police team was established, led by Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Itanagar, Kengo Dirchi. Inspector Rina Sonam and Sub-Inspector Rosy Singpho spearheaded the investigative efforts, employing innovative social engineering tactics and extensive resources to locate the accused. Their dedication ultimately led to Roy’s identification in Assam, where strategic measures were taken to lure him back to Itanagar, culminating in his arrest.
The Capital Police expressed deep appreciation for the special team’s relentless determination and hard work in bringing Roy to justice. Acknowledging that the delay in the arrest was largely due to the late registration of the First Information Report (FIR), the Superintendent of Police (SP) Capital emphasized the importance of timely reporting of crimes. He reassured the public that the police is committed to exhaustive efforts in the fight against crime and in the pursuit of justice for victims.
