YUPIA, Sep 24: The Special POCSO Court in Yupia today delivered a significant verdict against three individuals involved in the sexual abuse of 21 children at a government residential school in Karo, Shi-Yomi district.
The court found Yumken Bagra, Marbom Ngomdir, and Singtung Yorpen guilty of various offenses under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Bagra was convicted of causing hurt to the children, while Ngomdir and Yorpen were found guilty of sexual assault and sexual harassment.
The case, which had sent shockwaves through the community, involved allegations of widespread abuse at the residential school. The victims, all children from marginalized backgrounds, had endured horrific experiences at the hands of their abusers.
Advocate Oyam Binggep, who represented the victims, informed the media that while the court convicted three of the accused, one Daniel Pertin, has been acquitted because no evidence was found against him as of now, and regarding another alleged accused Tajung Yorpen, she informed that the victim who lodged a complaint against Yorpen, reportedly made herself hostile from the case.
Bingeep also announced that the sentences against the convicted individuals will be announced on Wednesday.
An FIR was lodged in November 2022 by a father of two victim daughters, stating that his daughters were sexually assaulted by Yumken Bagra, a former warden of the Government Residential School, Karo Village, Monigong, Shi Yomi district, between 2019 and 2022.
During the investigation by the SIT, it was revealed that Twenty-one children – 15 girls and six boys, aged 6 to 12 years (Class 1-5) – were sexually assaulted and molested by Bagra.
