ITANAGAR, Oct 16: Tensions escalated today as violence broke out during an ongoing protest staged by members of some student groups related to the upcoming All Nyishi Students Union (ANSU) election near the union’s office.
The protest, initially a peaceful dharna, took a turbulent turn despite the intervention of Deputy Commissioner ICR Talo Potom, who urged for calm and peace amid the unrest.
As per reports, some student groups have been demanding resolution to their grievances that have caused growing discontent within the students’ community. The protesters are also seeking intervention from the apex body of the community, the Nyishi Elite Society (NES), urging the organization to address their concerns and help restore harmony within the community.
Witnesses reported that the violence erupted as a group of agitators clashed with security personnel deployed to monitor the situation. Law enforcement quickly intervened, but tensions remain high as authorities worked to prevent further escalations. Despite the outbreak of violence, many of the protesters continued to stress that their movement remains focused on a peaceful resolution.
DC Talo Potom, who has been on the scene since the morning, appealed to both protesters and authorities to maintain peace and allow for dialogue to resolve the issues. "We are calling for calm. The grievances raised are valid, and we are working towards finding a solution that benefits all," he said.
As the situation continued to unfold, authorities have reinforced security around the ANSU office, and later the situation turned to normalcy in the evening.
