TAWANG, Oct 22: Tawang is all set to host the second edition of the International Tawang Marathon, an event that has captured the attention of athletes from around the globe. With an impressive altitude of 10,000 feet above sea level, the marathon is scheduled for October 24 and will see participation from over 4,500 runners from India and abroad.
In preparation for the event, an expo was organized at the Tawang War Memorial, where participants were able to register for the marathon. Indian Army officials, including a colonel, distributed jerseys and provided important updates about the race. The Tawang Marathon, organized jointly by the Indian Army and the Arunachal Pradesh civil administration, is fast becoming one of the most anticipated annual events in the region.
Dr. Rahul Sharma, the Race Director, provided further details about the marathon, emphasizing that medical teams, coordinated by the Indian Army, will be on hand to ensure the safety of all participants. With rigorous health checks and guidance for the runners, the organizers are taking every precaution to ensure the event runs smoothly.
Following the success of the inaugural marathon in 2023, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu declared the event a permanent fixture on the international sports calendar. This year, it will include full and half marathon races, along with 10-kilometre and 5-kilometre runs. To support the event, the Chief Minister announced a grant of Rs 2 crore, emphasizing the importance of the race for the state. The prize pool is equally impressive, with more than Rs 60 lakh to be distributed across different categories. The winner of the 60-kilometre race will receive a Rs 60 lakh cash prize.
The Tawang Stadium, which will serve as both the starting and finishing point of the marathon, has been beautifully decorated for the occasion. The race will be flagged off early in the morning by Chief Minister Pema Khandu, alongside General Officer Commanding Lt. Gen. Gambhir Singh of the Gajraj Corps and other dignitaries.
