NAMSAI, Aug 21: The final escapee of the recent Namsai jailbreak incident, Gopal Munda, surrendered to authorities after days on the run. Munda, who was arrested under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, gave himself up at Piyong Circle in Samhong village on the midnight of August 21, after being apprehended by local villagers.
The villagers of Samhong played a crucial role in Munda's capture, handing him over to the Namsai Police. His surrender marks the end of the search for the four undertrial prisoners (UTPs) who had escaped from the Namsai jail earlier this month, informed sources.
Earlier, SP Namsai Sange Thinley revealed that UTP Mileswar Dihingia was already facing trial in at least four cases, including Mahadevpur PS Case 12/2011 (US-365/302/301: Kidnapping and Murder), Namsai PS Case 3/2013 (US-364/392: Robbery), Namsai PS Case No. 18/21 (US-392: Robbery), and SIT Case 3/2021 (US-384: Extortion) under the Arms Act. Dihingia, considered a dangerous accused, was also a cadre of NSCN. Arjun Kanda was arrested under Case 42/25 for kidnapping, and Robin Surin was arrested under Case 32/23 (US-302: Murder).
Special Investigation Team (SIT)from Namsai police in collaboration with the IRBN,185 Bn CRPF and 11-Assam Rifles (Alpha Company), were on the job to recapture the fugitives.
