ITANAGAR, June 27: In a significant development in the heath sector, the lone medical college Tomo Riba Institute of Health & Medical Sciences (TRIHMS) in Arunachal Pradesh has received approval to increase its MBBS seats from 50 to 100 for the 2024-2025 academic year.
The National Medical Commission (NMC) granted this approval following an application submitted by the institute under the relevant sections of the NMC Act, 2019.
Expressing gratitude to the Ministry, Chief Minister Pema Khandu took to X, stating, "I am extremely delighted to share that the National Medical Commission has increased MBBS seats to 100 at TRIHMS, Naharlagun. Now, we will have more students from Arunachal Pradesh pursuing their medical studies at one of the best colleges in the country. Team Arunachal is steadfast in their resolve to provide better academic avenues to those aspiring to join medical services, thereby having a pool of our own doctors to serve the people of the state and the country more effectively."
The approval letter, issued by the member of Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) of the NMC Jitulal Ramprasad Meena indicates that the increased seat capacity will be valid until the first batch of students admitted under the new capacity appears for their final examination. Subsequently, the institute will need to seek recognition of the qualification under section 35(2) of the NMC Act, 2019.
As per the approval letter, NMC stated that the institution is fully responsible to fulfil and maintain norms including the infrastructure both physical and human resource, teaching faculty and clinical material etc. throughout the academic year, as stipulated in Regulation of National Medical Commission (NMC). In case false/wrong declaration or fabricated documents have been used for procuring permission of the MARB and the said misconduct is brought to the notice of National Medical Commission (NMC) or found during surprise assessment at any stage during the current academic year, institution is liable, not be considered for recognition of the degree.
It is mandatory for the Government medical colleges to contribute 15% of MBBS seats and 50% of Post Graduate Broad Specialities (MD/MS) for All India Quota respectively, to MCC of DGHS for conduction of counselling as per the directions of the Supreme Court. It is mandatory to develop a website on the medical college/ institution and display all the information of the college, courses offered, faculty available and their experience of the last 5 years, students joined, and affiliating university. To display the hospital services, facilities available and the equipment in each specialty, also showing OP and IP census including births and deaths as per the municipal/ Govt. records, stated the Order from NMC.
