PASIGHAT, Oct 7: A 33-year-old man has been sentenced to 20 years imprisonment and life sentence for sexually assaulting and impregnating his minor step-daughter. One Kalen Apang was found guilty of committing offence of penetrative sexual assault against his step-daughter under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act and the Indian Penal Code by the Special Court POCSO Act, Pasighat.
On 23rd March, 2022 a written complaint was received at Jenging Police Station from the District Child Protection Unit (DCPU) that Apang had sexually assaulted his minor step daughter in the year 2019 and while out on bail committed the same offence on the thirteen-year-old and accordingly a case was registered under POCSO Act.
The victim-child had been staying with Kalen Apang since she attained about 11 years of age when her mother who works at Tea Garden at Ramsing married the convict. The convict started sexually abusing the victim child instantly after the marriage and ultimately impregnated the victim child. The incident came to light when the aunt of the victim-survivor found out that she was pregnant and brought her to Yingkiong for medical examination. Subsequently an FIR was lodged against the convict and he was arrested and later on enlarged on bail. But after his release from jail, the convict Kalen forcefully came again and stayed with the victim-child and her mother and repeated the same and committed sexual assault on the victim-child and impregnated her again. 
While sentencing, the defence counsel for the convict pleaded for mercy and prayed for 20 years of imprisonment however, the Special Judge said that the convict had shown no remorse for his action and he had utter disregard for law and order and despite being enlarged on bail had committed the same offence twice. The Special Judge therefore pronounced a double sentence in the open court against the convict of 20 years of imprisonment for the first offence and life imprisonment for the subsequent offence.
