KOLORIANG, Jul 8: Kurung Kumey District, has been severely affected by heavy incessant rains over the past few weeks, leading to extensive infrastructural damages due to erosion and landslides. The towns of Sarli, Polosang, Paniasang, Damin, and Parsi Parlo, including the district headquarters, are completely cut off, causing major connectivity issues in these sensitive international border areas near the Indo-China border.
Several bridges and roads have been washed away, isolating the region and impacting both the local population and security forces, including the army, ITBP, SSB, and SIB personnel, who are now facing significant challenges in border patrolling operations.
Speaking to media, a denizen Arun Yangfo from Sarli town has voiced their concerns about the delayed restoration efforts by state departments such as Highway, RWD, and the Central agency BRO. He has urged the state government to provide daily helicopter services in Kurung Kumey district when the weather permits until the roads are restored. Additionally, Yangfo has called for the Civil Supply department to provide essential commodities such as ration, fuel, and gas cylinders, as the district is facing an escalating crisis. The health department has also been urged to supply essential medicines and deploy doctors to the affected towns.
Yangfo highlighted the sensitivity of the district due to its extensive international border with China, emphasizing that the current isolation with no road or network connectivity is severely impacting the region. Even the movements of security forces are hindered. He also noted that despite being cut off, local MLA Pani Taram trekked for several hours to reach the affected areas.
Deputy Commissioner of Kurung Kumey district, Vishakha Yadav IAS, confirmed that the road towards Damin via Parsi Parlo is severely blocked due to incessant rainfall. The RWD has been given a deadline to clear the blockage by today evening, with work continuing overnight. Efforts are underway to transport rations through Tata Mobiles and on foot to the respective circles of Damin and Paniasang. Additionally, teams are working on the ground to restore water and electricity supply, both of which have suffered major damages. The district administration, in collaboration with BRO, is making provisions for Air Force sorties once the weather clears.
