TIRAP, Dec 16: In a shocking turn of events, former legislator Yumsen Matey, who previously represented the 56 Khonsa West constituency, was brutally killed by unknown assailant near Raho village in Lazu circle of Tirap district. The incident occurred around 2 pm when Matey had gone to Raho village for personal work, accompanied by three workers.
According to preliminary reports, an unidentified person separated Matey from his workers, leading him towards a jungle area. Some 30 minutes later, gunshots were heard by the workers, marking the tragic end of the former MLA's life.
The incident has prompted swift action from law enforcement, with an FIR (First Information Report) being registered at the Lazu Police Station. Investigators are actively pursuing leads and gathering further details to ascertain the motive behind this heinous crime, informed PRO Arunachal Pradesh Police.
Tirap police also confirmed the report of the incident and added that a police team has rushed to the spot of the incident to recover the body and to collect a ground zero report.
Yumsen Matey was a well-respected figure in the political landscape, known for his dedication to public service. Recently, Matey had declared his candidacy, expressing his intention to resume his political career and contest the election from the Khonsa-West constituency. Matey was elected as an MLA from Khonsa West assembly constituency on a Congress ticket in 2009. He joined the BJP in 2015 and, earlier this year, declared his willingness to contest the assembly polls in 2024.
Before entering politics, he served as district adult education officer in Changlang district.
In 2019, in a similar assassination, the then-sitting MLA and former Minister from the same Khonsa West Assembly Constituency, Tirong Aboh and 10 others were shot dead in Tirap district by alleged NSCN cadres.
