ITANAGAR, Nov 21: In order to exercise and rehearse key disaster managers in their roles and responsibilities with respect to possible emergency situations through simulated scenarios, the Department of Disaster Management in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Authority, organised a Table Top Exercise amongst the District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMAs), SDRF, NDRF, BRO, CRPF, ITBP and other stakeholders.
The programme was attended by Member NDMA Lt. Gen. (Rtd) Syed Ata Hasnain virtually, MLA cum Advisor to Chief Minister on Disaster Management, Tanpho Wangnaw, Chief Secretary Dharmendra, Secretary Disaster Management Dani Salu, and Director Disaster Management Komar Dulom.
Stating that Arunachal Pradesh is a multi-hazard state due to its fragile topography, Wangnaw emphasized on regular mock exercises at State level as well as the district level. He stated that right preparedness can only be the mantra to mitigate impacts of impending disaster and minimise loss of lives and properties during natural and manmade disasters.
Lt. Gen Syed Ata Hasnain during his special address mentioned that coordination among line departments and other stakeholders are important for better disaster preparedness and management.
The Chief Secretary said that earthquakes are natural disasters that can strike without warning, causing widespread destruction and affecting countless lives.
Arunachal Pradesh is in high seismic zone 5, as such, the communities in the State are highly vulnerable to earthquake. As such it is important that all the departments and other stakeholders remain prepared for any such kind eventuality in future, the Chief Secretary said. He emphasized that the goal of mock drill is to test and improve entire capability of an organization/ community by means of strengthening the relevant policies, plans and protocols.
Major General (Retd) Sudhir Bahl, Coordinator, NDMA conducted table top exercise and asked the DDMAs to address the gaps.
Komkar Dulom also spoke on the occasion.
