ITANAGAR, Sep 15: Deprived candidates under the Sports Quota in the Police Department took to the streets here on Sunday, demanding justice from the state government over the long-delayed recruitment process.
The protest, led by affected sports personnel, focused on the cancellation of the 2018 physical efficiency test without any clear justification from the department, leaving many aspirants in limbo for nearly seven years.
Speaking to the media, a participant, Gamjar Bui highlighted the frustration among candidates, stating that despite repeated appeals, the government has not reconducted the postponed 2018 recruitment process. “The delay has deprived numerous athletes from securing jobs under the Sports Quota. Almost seven years have passed, and we are still waiting for the recruitment to resume,” Bui stated.
He also revealed discrepancies in the eligibility criteria, noting that before 2018, all karate events, including both styles and open categories, were accepted by the department. However, with the introduction of new rules in 2022, many of these categories were excluded from the quota, which has further complicated the issue. “There was no such rule in 2018, so we are appealing to the authorities to continue with the recruitment process as per the old regulations,” Bui added. He further mentioned that there are currently 53 vacant posts, while at least 34 applicants remain, making the delay unjustifiable.
Another participant, Ha Rimi, questioned the fairness of applying the 2022 rules to the 2018 recruitment process, arguing that many sports personnel had been appointed before the new regulations came into effect. “If they refuse to resume the 2018 recruitment, then the department should cancel all the appointments made before 2022 under the Sports Quota,” Rimi said, while pointing out inconsistencies revealed through RTI documents that show appointments were made under older criteria even after the new rules were implemented.
A case related to this issue has already been filed in court, and the protesters are urging the authorities to act swiftly and ensure justice for those who have been unfairly affected by the delay, she added.
