ITANAGAR, Dec 20: The Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (PCCF) & Chief Wildlife Warden (CWC), Ngilyang Tam, on Wednesday, directed the Itanagar capital region’s Forest Officer (FO) to initiate strict action against those hunting and selling wildlife meat during the year-end festivities.
The decision comes after a resolution was agreed upon to take action against the sale and consumption of wild meat during the winter festive months within the capital complex.
“There is a rise in the sale and consumption of wild meat throughout the state by the locals during festive celebrations, New Year and picnics where wild meat is being served,” Tam said.
In tune with the District Administration's decision to impose section 144 Cr PC on the people roaming with arms within the capital complex, the PCCF also directed the forest officers to take action against those seen in possession of arms under penal provisions of the Wildlife Act.
Informing hunting, possession, transport, consumption and sale of wild meat is strictly prohibited under Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, he appealed to the denizens of the capital not to indulge in such illegal activities which may invite them a fine or imprisonment up to seven years.
For future course of action to restrict the illegal activities in the state and capital complex in particular, the department would be increasing vigilance with thorough checking of vehicles at forest check gates, markets, forest areas by activating intelligence networks.
Later, the officers were also advised to create awareness among the citizens against the consumption of wild meat by conducting awareness programmes on a regular basis.
