Roing, Jun 28: Carp fish seed production using portable hatchery was successfully done for the first time in Lower Dibang Valley district during a 3-day hands on training cum demonstration programme on fish seed production and culture of carps which commenced on June 26 at KVK Balek and Rukmo Village in LDV.
During the demonstration of induced breeding of Indian Major Carp Rohu, around 8 lakh spawn was produced using the portable hatchery. This initiative makes  Lower Dibang Valley district “Atmanirbhar” in carp seed production and would meet up the seed demand of over 250 farmers of the district.                   
Progressive farmer Oling Modi, participating in the training, appreciated the activities undertaken by ICAR-CIFE for the welfare of the farming community and urged the participants to adopt scientific fish farming practices to enhance productivity and improve their livelihood.
Principal Scientist (ICAR-CIFE), Kolkata Centre Dr. G. Biswas, delivered various classes on composite fish culture, breeding and hatchery management of fish. He demonstrated the induced breeding technique practically to the farmers. He recommended the use of quality, uniform and bigger size fish seeds in multiple stocking and multiple harvesting farming system to increase the fish productivity. He also stressed that the successful hatchery model can be propagated at various places of the state for the benefit of farmers.
Scientist (ICAR-CIFE), Kolkata Centre Dr. Dilip Kumar Singh covered the topics of design and construction of fish hatchery, nursery management, broodstock and larval nutrition, importance of farm made aquafeed utilizing locally available cheap feed ingredients to reduce the feed cost. 
Senior Scientist and Head (KVK Balek) Dr. Deepanjali Deori expressed that the training programme, establishment and running of the hatchery would immensely benefit fish farmers who lack knowledge on scientific fish farming and meet up the fish seed demand to improve their livelihood by adopting modern methods of aquaculture. 
Jimmy Mize (SMS,Fishery Science) briefed about various activities and services of KVK for the benefit of farmers. Okili Linggi, the Farmers group leader and the hatchery operator from Rukmo Village shared his happiness on the establishment and initiation of operation of the hatchery at his farm which will help in meeting up the fish seed requirement in the area and increase the fish production of the district and the state.
With an objective to meet up the local fish seed demand, an FRP made carp eco-hatchery with a holding capacity of 25 kg broodfish and one million fish seed production per cycle was established at Rukmo Village in Lower Dibang Valley district by Kolkata Centre of ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Education (CIFE), Mumbai with the assistance of KVK, Balek. 
The portable fish hatchery is used for imparting hands-on skill development on induced breeding of carps, hatchery operation, seed production and culture to the fish farmers.
20 fish farmers participated and received critical inputs for fish farming such as lime, fish feed and study materials from the organizers.
