ITANAGAR, Jan 21: In a major breakthrough, capital police arrested the prime accused Majibur Rahman, also known as Atabur Rahman, marking the end of an extensive 11-year manhunt for a criminal involved in a heinous crime. Rahman was wanted in connection with the Akashdeep double murders in 2008, which involved the rape and murder of two sisters running a beauty parlour in Itanagar.
Speaking to the media, Superintendent of Police, Rohit Rajbir Singh (IPS) informed that after escaping from judicial custody in 2012 along with two other prisoners, Rahman had successfully evaded authorities for over a decade. His criminal profile reveals a history of thefts and involvement in numerous cases across Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
During his journey, Rahman changed his identity from Majibur Rahman to Atabur Rahman and traveled through various states, including Kerala and Karnataka. He spent time in Majuli, Assam, before moving between jobs in Narayanpur, Lakhimpur, and other locations.
The arrest was made possible through the persistent efforts of the Itanagar Police, led by SP Itanagar Rohit Rajbir Singh. The team, under the supervision of SDPO Itanagar DySP Kengo Dirchi, used electronic and human surveillance to track Rahman. The successful operation involved the cooperation of officers such as OC PS Itanagar Inspector Khiksi Yangfo, SI R.K Jha, Ct Sandeep Yadav, and special assistance from Ct Sanu Raj T of PS Naharlagun, added the SP.
A resident of Gohaidholoni Village in Sunapur Circle under Bihpuria Police Station of North Lakhimpur district, Assam, Majibur Rahman before committing the gruesome act of murder and rape in the year 2008 was a habitual thief and a part of the gang wanted across Assam and Arunachal for having committed dozens of thefts. Further SP Itanagar commended the dedication and brilliance of the police team in ensuring the arrest of a dreaded criminal who had been on the run for over a decade. Additionally, he urged the general public to prioritize servant verification with the police before hiring individuals for household jobs to enhance personal safety.
