NIRJULI, Sep 14: A two-day beneficiary training programme focused on the manufacturing and marketing of eco-friendly, leaf-based serving dishes concluded at the North Eastern Regional Institute of Science and Technology (NERIST) here on Saturday.
The training, organized by the Department of Electrical Engineering, was sponsored by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India.
With around 20 participants in attendance, the programme aimed to equip beneficiaries with the necessary skills to create and market sustainable, environmentally friendly dishes made from natural leaves.
The initiative is expected to open new avenues for local entrepreneurship while promoting eco-conscious alternatives to plastic-based products.
Speaking at the event, Prof Radak Blange from the department of electrical engineering highlighted the “importance of sustainable practices in today’s world”.
“This initiative is a small but significant step towards empowering individuals and communities with skills that promote sustainability. Manufacturing leaf-based serving dishes not only reduces plastic waste but also supports local economies,” he said.
Engineer Mai Aram Camdir, who participated in the event as guest of honor, applauded the beneficiaries' enthusiasm.
“We are witnessing a shift towards eco-friendly solutions, and programs like this help bridge the gap between traditional practices and modern needs. I hope that the skills learned here will contribute to the livelihood of the participants while also helping the environment,” Camdir remarked.
The event also marked the inauguration of a manufacturing machine for leaf-based utensils and a 10 KW solar power plant, demonstrating NERIST's commitment to combining innovation with sustainable development.
As part of the initiative, three manufacturing machines will be handed over to local self-help groups at the end of the training. This move is expected to empower the groups to establish sustainable business ventures, providing both income opportunities and eco-friendly products for the market.
Notable dignitaries present at the event included P D Kashyap and Prof A K Singh, who shared their insights on the importance of developing skills that contribute to green entrepreneurship.
