ITANAGAR, Dec 17: A maiden 14-day National Handloom Expo titled “Gandhi Bunkar Mela” jointly organised by the Department of Textile & Handicrafts, Govt. of Arunachal Pradesh and the Development Commissioner (Handlooms), Ministry of Textiles, Govt. of India got underway on Saturday.
The national level expo is being held from December 16-29 next at the Arunachal Bhawan, Salt Lake City, Kolkata will feature an exhibition cum sale of handicrafts from across the country, including the Northeast and Arunachal Pradesh. A total of 80 stalls have been set up with a wide range of crafts and handloom products. Participants have come from across the country to Kolkata in a bid to showcase their products at the exhibition. This includes a diverse attendance, including participants from Arunachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Jharkhand, Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur and the state of West Bengal as well.
The mela was inaugurated by Kajal Karmakar APCS , the Additional Resident Commissioner, Govt. of Arunachal Pradesh in Kolkata, amidst a huge gathering. Karmakar lauded the initiative undertaken by the department of textile and handicrafts to popularise the products of handloom and handicrafts which have century-old legacy of cultural heritage of the indigenous people of Arunachal Pradesh. “This kind of mela will focus the rich cultural heritage of material and tangible culture of the ethnic people," he said.
Naz Pertin, Assistant Director of Textile and Handicrafts delivered welcome speech and expressed gratitude to the Additional Resident Commissioner and other departments who extended logistic support to organise the mela including Police and Corporation.
Among others Dr. Leki Wangchuk, Chairman, Arunachal Pradesh Food Commission, S.Nath Former DRC and representative of Zonal Director Weavers Service Centre Govt of India were also present at the inaugural ceremony.
The students of Arunachal in Kolkata presented electrifying dance and song performances in their traditional style. Participants of the various stalls also put together a mesmerizing song, and in their respective speeches, thanked the Government for the initiative and the platform to showcase their talent.
