ITANAGAR, Sep 25: Government employees across Arunachal Pradesh, under the banner of the Confederation of Service Associations of Arunachal Pradesh (CoSAAP) and in coordination with the All India State Government Employees' Federation (AISGEF), are staging protests as part of National Protest Day on September 26.
The employees are demanding the complete abolition of the National Pension System (NPS) and the reinstatement of the Old Pension System (OPS). They argue that the NPS, which replaced the OPS for government employees joining service after January 1, 2004, is a market-linked investment with no guaranteed social or economic security.
In addition, the employees are urging the state government to refrain from implementing the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS), which they consider to be a mere rebranding of the existing Contributory Pension Scheme.
Given the rising cost of living and the improving economic conditions, the employees are also calling for the formation of the 8th Central Pay Committee to ensure timely implementation of a revised pay scale from January 1, 2026.
The protest comes amidst growing discontent among state government employees nationwide over pension-related issues. Many employees believe that the NPS has failed to provide adequate financial security during and after retirement, stated a release.
