ITANAGAR, Dec 17: The state’s top brass mourned the brutal killing of former legislator Yumsen Matey on Saturday. The 53-year-old former MLA was shot dead by an unknown assailant in eastern Arunachal’s Tirap district near the Myanmar border.
Arunachal Pradesh Governor Lt Gen K T Parnaik and Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Sunday mourned the death of former MLA Yumsen Matey.
Governor Lt Gen (retired) KT Parnaik condemned the killing and called for strong action against those responsible. Chief Minister Pema Khandu asked the police to expedite the probe to ensure that the perpetrators of the crime are brought to book at the earliest.
“I am deeply anguished at the demise of former MLA Yumsen Matey and strongly condemn the horrific act. My deepest condolences to the family and I assure you that the state government stands firmly with them in this moment of grief…” Khandu wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
Reacting to the assassination, state’s Home Minister Bamang Felix expressed profound sadness over the untimely loss, condemning the act as a stark departure from the values of a peaceful and civilized society.
Minister Felix on X, reassured the public that a thorough investigation is underway to bring those responsible for this heinous crime to justice. He emphasized the government's commitment to ensuring that the perpetrators face the full extent of the law for their appalling actions.
"During this challenging time, my deepest sympathies are with the family of the late Matey, as well as his admirers and the entire community of Khonsa West. We stand together in mourning and in the pursuit of justice," stated Felix.
The assassination has left the community in shock and grief, and the government is actively working to provide support to the affected family while simultaneously addressing the broader implications of this tragic incident. The pursuit of justice remains a top priority for the authorities as they navigate through this challenging period, said the Home Minster.
Earlier, speaking to a media channel, IGP Law & Order Chuku Apa informed that though security measures have been strengthened in the area, additional measures have been intensified to apprehend any militants involved in the assassination. Further, he revealed that a joint meeting between the State Police and Assam Rifles, focusing on security issues, is scheduled for December 19th next at Police Headquarters in Itanagar.
