Itanagar, Jun 28: Two engineers from the Centre for Earth Sciences & Himalayan Studies (CES&HS), Itanagar, were part of the training on advanced glaciology monitoring techniques conducted by the National Center for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR), Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India.
Technical Officers Er. Nyelam Sunil and Er. Romik Tato were part of the 18-day glacier expedition conducted at Chandra Basin in Himachal Pradesh from June 10 to 27.
The glacier expedition was conducted with an aim to study glacier dynamics and the impacts of climate change on the high-altitude Himalayas. The scientists have collected precise data using advanced instruments. This initiative also focuses on assessing the risk of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOF), which caused devastating floods in western Himalayas.
The Centre for Earth Sciences & Himalayan Studies & National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research have planned to monitor Khangri Glacier in the Kameng basin and Subansiri Glacier with advanced cryosphere monitoring techniques in Arunachal Himalayas. A total number of 161 critical glaciers have been identified   in Arunachal Pradesh with total Glacierized area spread over 233 Sq km and total Ice volume of 9.96 sq km including high accumulation zone with very high elevation. A recent study conducted jointly by both organizations had identified a proglacial lake named Rani Lake in Khangri Glacier, increasing melting of feeder Khangri Glacier over the Rani Lake, which contributes to expand the volume of lake.  It is quite significant in terms of hazard that can be generated from the Glacial Lake outburst flood (GLOF). This kind of climate change induced increase in the rate of Glacial melting, is a cause of concern as the Rani Lake may turn out to be vulnerable to natural hazard like GLOF.
