ITANAGAR, Feb 5: The Arunachal Christian Forum (ACF) has intensified its opposition to the implementation of the Arunachal Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act, 1978, announcing a series of protests, including hunger strike and demonstrations.
Addressing the media at the Arunachal Press Club on Monday, President ACF Tarh Miri reiterated that the said Act contradicts constitutional rights and the principles of Christianity. “We have been opposing this law for the past 45 years, and its implementation is against the spirit of religious freedom,” Miri asserted.
As part of its protest, the ACF has scheduled demonstrations from February 10 to 17, marking the period with statewide prayer and fasting as the first phase of its protest. Miri further urged Christians across Arunachal Pradesh to participate, adding that no celebrations, including birthdays and picnics, would be observed during this time.
Further escalating its movement, the ACF has planned a hunger strike at the Tennis Court in Itanagar on February 17, followed by a mass protest near the state assembly building on March 6 as second and third phase.
Miri also revealed that the forum had submitted a representation to the Chief Minister’s Office and held discussions with MLA Alo Libang who is Advisor to Chief Minister and the Chief Secretary. However, he expressed disappointment at the lack of a favourable response from the government as of now.
