Govt working on documentation of  tangible, 
intangible cultural heritage 

 

ITANAGAR, Dec 2: Education & Cultural Affairs Minister, Er. Taba Tedir stated that the state government is working zealously towards preservation, promotion and documentation of the rich cultural heritage of various tribes of the state through a proper cultural policy.
Speaking at the inauguration programme of INTACH Arunachal Chapter at JN State Museum Auditorium, organized by INTACH (Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage), New Delhi in collaboration with the Directorate of Research, Department of Cultural Affairs, GoAP here today, Tedir said that Arunachal Pradesh is a treasure trove with as many as 26 major tribes and more than 100 sub-tribes with diverse culture and traditions of their own and opined that such research works for preservation and promotion of the cultural heritage will greatly benefit the state.
While expressing his happiness on inaugurating the INTACH Arunachal Chapter, the Minister said that government is taking various steps for proper documentation of all tangible and intangible cultural heritage of all major tribes, adding that all the museums in the state would be digitized very shortly.
He informed that in order to preserve the local dialects, government had introduced dialects of twelve tribes as third language in schools up to class 8 and urged upon the INTACH to take specific steps to preserve those dialects which are on verge of extinction.
Tedir also mentioned that all necessary supports have been provided to include the Thembang village in West Kameng district and Apatani Cultural Landscape, Ziro in UNESCO World Heritage Sites, adding, many more including Bhalukpong Fort, Tameshwari Temple at Paya and Bishmak Nagar are in offing to get enlisted in the World Heritage Site list.
Earlier, Director INTACH, Capt ( Retd) Arvind Shukla, in his opening remark informed that the INTACH, set up in 1984 is India’s premier heritage conservation organization dedicated to preserve and conserve the environment to revitalize India’s intangible heritage, besides fostering awareness and appreciation of its vast multi-faceted cultural heritage. He said that involvement of citizen towards cultural conservation is pertinent, as government alone cannot protect the heritage, and expressed the need to strengthen  the chapter inaugurated today, in the state through collaboration with various stakeholders for comprehensive documentation of oral traditions, cultural designs, culturally significant sites, raising awareness among people on cultural conservation through outreach programmes etc for detailed preservation and promotion of state’s diverse cultural heritage.
Giving an overview of INTACH activities, Nerupama Y. Modwel highlighted on their works and projects taken up in the North East in preserving and promoting the tangible and intangible heritages. While introducing the event’s objective, she divulges the organization’s plans to work in the state of Arunachal Pradesh through comprehensive road map to preserve the diverse state’s cultural heritages that included people’s museum, cultural mapping and nurturing community knowledge on oral traditions, arts & crafts, rituals, customs, food-ways and traditional agriculture knowledge to create an ongoing archive of community knowledge, besides for educational purposes.
INTACH State Convenor, Oken Tayeng said that as culture is the foundation of every society, the Arunachal Chapter will work as a bridge between state and INTACH towards preserving and promoting state’s heritages.
Among others, the inaugural programme was attended by Padmashree Y.D Thongchi, Padmashree Mamang Dai, Director Research Kanggo Tayeng, Director IPR Onyok Pertin and other officers and officials from Research Department.
