ITANAGAR, Sep 18: The All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) has declared a ban on the proposed “Gau Dhwaj Yatra” event led by Jagadguru Shankaracharya in the state capital, Itanagar.
The yatra, aimed at garnering support for a Bill to ban cow slaughter and declare the cow as the "Mother of the Nation," has been met with strong opposition from AAPSU, which cited concerns over interference with indigenous customs and cultural practices.
Addressing the media, Byabang Hapu Dui, Finance Secretary of AAPSU, revealed that the Union has submitted a formal letter to the District Administration of the Itanagar Capital Region (ICR) requesting the prohibition of the event scheduled to be held on September 27 next. “We are not against any religion and we welcome Jagadguru Shankaracharya if he comes to preach about Hinduism or other religious matters. However, dictating our indigenous food habits or interfering in our cultural practices is not acceptable,” he stated.
Hapu Dui further emphasized that the Arunachal Pradesh's religious harmony, noting that various communities, including Hindus, Muslims, Christians, and others, peacefully practice their faith without encroaching on each other's beliefs. He stressed that the same respect should be shown towards the indigenous customs and traditions of the state.
The AAPSU finance secretary warned that if the Jagadguru proceeds with the “Gau Dhwaj Yatra” despite their objections, the District Administration will be held responsible for any potential law and order disruptions that may arise from the event.
