ITANAGAR, Dec 18: The Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) slammed the BJP-led state government on Monday over the recent assassination of former MLA Yumsen Matey, terming it as a total failure of the state government’s intelligence department.
The Congress also demanded an immediate investigation into the assassination and police protection for the aspiring MLA candidates of Tirap, Changlang, and Longding districts (TCL).
Addressing reporters at the press club today, APCC General Secretary Zirgi Kadu said that the recent assassination of former MLA Yumsen Matey and the then sitting MLA Late Tirong Aboh shows that the law and order situation in the state is continuously deteriorating. It is evident that the state government is failing to protect its own people from insurgency, he said.
He further added that a village Chief and a Gaon Burah from Panchao-Wakka constituency of Longding district, who were abducted a month ago by insurgents are yet to be brought back. This indicates how incapable the state government is in protecting the people, especially in the TCL districts, the Congress said.
“Why is the state and central government failing to finish the insurgency prevailing in the TCL area. Moreover, the matter is no more concerning for the people of the TCL area but for the entire state. The government should wake up from deep slumber and act upon it immediately,” Kadu added.
He went on to claim that there has been repeated murders, theft, corruption and other illegal activities reported in the state capital, Itanagar. Now, instead of acting upon it, is the state government led by CM Pema Khandu taking the people for granted? he questioned.
The Congress party also demanded the state government to come up with a permanent solution to bring the strayed youths to mainstream living. At the same time, the party appealed to the people of Tirap district to remain vigilant and maintain peaceful until the culprit is arrested.
“According to reports, the murderer has already crossed India and reached Myanmar. This is the reason why the Congress party is repeatedly stressing upon the central government to increase security in the international boundary,” he said, adding that unless the international border area is secured, such incidents will continue.
On Saturday afternoon, Matey was shot dead by an unknown person near the Indo-Myanmar border in Lazu circle of Tirap district.
He was planning to contest the ensuing 2024 election from the Khonsa West assembly constituency and had recently announced his candidature. Late Matey had been elected as an MLA for the first time in 2009 on a Congress ticket. He lost the election in 2014, and later joined the BJP in 2015.
