ITANAGAR, Aug 6: Hundreds of aggrieved candidates eligible for Compassionate Ground appointments under the Home Department in the Arunachal Pradesh Police, gathered at the Tennis Court to stage a sit-in protest. They were demanding relaxation in recruitment rules to secure employment.
Holding placards and banners, the protesters chanted slogans, calling for justice and the fulfilment of their long-standing demands.
Speaking to the media one of the candidates, voiced frustration over the authorities' inaction despite numerous appeals. "We have aged waiting for a response; if we have to wait any longer, we may miss the opportunity to work. Our demand is simple—we seek employment, not necessarily in the same positions our late family members held," she explained. Highlighting the plight of the families, she noted that some have been waiting for as long as 32 years for a job under compassionate grounds.
The protesters primary demand includes the relaxation of the Physical Efficiency Test (PET) and written tests, as well as the creation of at least 450 new posts to accommodate them. They pointed to a similar situation in 2019 when 322 individuals were absorbed in the department, urging the state government to take similar action now.
The candidates further emphasized that many of their family members—fathers, husbands, sons, and brothers—had sacrificed their lives in service to the state and the police department. They appealed that their sacrifices should be honoured with meaningful employment opportunities for their surviving dependents.
The protesters called on the government to act swiftly and compassionately, ensuring that the sacrifices made by their loved ones are recognized and that they are provided with a secure future.
