ITANAGAR, Aug 23: In the wake of the rising incidents of crimes against women and children in Arunachal Pradesh, the All Arunachal Pradesh Students Union - Women Wing (AAPSU-WW) has urged the state government to set up Fast-Track Courts to expedite the trials of sexual offenses and cases under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
Addressing the media at the press club on Friday, AAPSU-WW President Ponung Darang emphasized the need for swift justice in cases of sexual violence and child abuse. "There are numerous cases pending in various courts, and although there are many laws in place to protect women and children, justice is often delayed due to the pending of cases in the regular courts," Darang stated. She appealed to the government to establish dedicated Fast-Track Courts specifically for POCSO cases to ensure timely justice for the victims.
In addition to the demand for Fast-Track Courts, Darang also called for the establishment of more women-only police stations across the state. "Currently, only seven women police stations are operational. We urge the government to set up at least one women's police station in every district headquarters to better handle cases involving women and children," she added.
The AAPSU-WW President further requested the state government to provide adequate support to the "Women & Child Helpline 181" by enhancing infrastructure and financial assistance according to the needs of the service. "This helpline plays a crucial role in assisting women and children in distress, and it should be made accessible in all districts," Darang said.
The AAPSU-WW's call for action highlights the need for stronger measures to protect women and children in Arunachal Pradesh, emphasizing the importance of timely justice, increased security, and accessible support services.
