MAHADEVPUR, Nov 8: Normal life was paralysed in Lekang circle on Wednesday as the All Moran Students Union-Arunachal Pradesh Committee called for a 12-hour bandh demanding Permanent Residential Certificates (PRCs) for the Moran community.
All business establishments and institutions remained closed during the bandh, and even vehicles were off the road. Hundreds of vehicles were stranded outside the Dirak Check gate in Lekang. However, medical cases, school examinations and security forces were allowed to move by the agitators.
Speaking to the media, AMSUAPC General Secretary Sarat Moran said the bandh was called after the state government failed to respond to its representation submitted during a mass rally at Lekang demanding PRCs for the Moran community.
He asserted that the Moran community has been residing in Lekang since the pre-independence era but has been deprived of any benefits from the government. He warned that if the state government failed to take any action, the AMSU might go for other extreme steps like an economic blockade.
The boundary issue between Assam and Arunachal is already cleared but PRC issue is still pending. Moreover, three committees formed by the state government have recommended to provide PRC to the people of Lekang but till now no such development has been made, said Vice President- Bogen Boruah -AMSUAPC.
He further threatened that if the state government continues to delay in providing PRC, the protest may go further and may create inter-district problems.
