SEPPA, Nov 9: In the run up to World Toilet Day on November 19, East Kameng district has launched various activities such as awareness rallies, waste collection, etc., that will be carried out at Block level between November 9-19. 
The contest was launched at Lumdung village today in the presence of village communities, their headmen, PRI (Panchayat Raj functionaries) and district officials.  It has been organized by the district administration of East Kameng in collaboration with Public Health Engineering and Water Supply Division, (PHE & WS) Seppa.
Commenting on the activities planned, Deputy Commissioner Gaurav Singh Rajawat said that the event would be held at all the GPs under the district. Mass IEC campaigns will be conducted by paying door to door visit and encouraging people to use toilets which would be a key factor for its sustainability. He also briefed the villagers about the significance of having hygienic lifestyle by owning a sanitary toilet. He further emphasized for weekly cleanliness drive at each GPs by their community members. Besides educating the mass, he also requested teachers’ in-charge of schools to teach hand washing techniques to their students.  The motivators of PHE & WS Department were requested to demonstrate hand washing techniques to the villagers in every IEC campaign.

Among the scheduled activities are – village level awareness generation rallies on swachhata; introduction of twin pit technology; waste collection and segregation drives among households and public spaces; and orientation about improvised pigsty with an innovative approach to proper disposal of piggery waste.  It will culminate with a celebration of World Toilet Day on 19th November at Block level.
Since the launch, increased activity has been noticed in all villages with Gaon Burahs (village headmen) talking about importance of using toilets.
On their part, the district officials led by the District Collector and Er.Bharat Sonam , Executive Engineer PHE & WS Division, Seppa have inspected toilets constructed under the Swachh Bharat Mission Grameen.
East Kameng that is home to 139 Gram Panchayats was declared open defecation free (ODF) on 31st December 2017 after completing 6616 individual household toilets (IHHL) in the previous year.
