ITANAGAR, June 18: The West Siang District Olympic Association has expressed anguish over the delay in completing the district multipurpose outdoor stadium in Aalo, despite the passage of eight years. They have called for a peaceful rally on June 20.
Addressing the media at the press club here today, Nyatum Bagra, acting president of the association, said that the construction agency should either complete the work immediately or clear the construction materials from the site. This would allow the youth of the district to continue with sports activities on the ground.
“Our protest is against the construction agency, TK Engineering Consortium. The agency has failed to complete the project for years for some unknown reasons, despite sufficient funds provided by the state government,” he said.
He informed that the West Siang District Olympic Association will be organizing a Mini Olympics in the district during the winter season. To make it successful, the construction agency should either complete the work on time or clear the place.
Bagra claimed that the District Sports Authority (DSA) is also to blame for the delay. According to sources, it was the DSA that registered a PIL in 2017 in court. The construction of the stadium began in 2016. Therefore, the DSA is also responsible for the delay of the work.
According to the PIL reports, the DSA claims that some of the construction work, such as the VIP rostrum and gallery, was built by them at their own expense. However, it is very clear that the entire project is state-sponsored.
“The delay in the completion of the stadium has created a negative impact among the sports lovers of the district. Many youths have turned to drugs due to the lack of sports facilities. Moreover, many sports activities could not be organized for the past 8 years due to the unavailability of the ground,” he added.
He said that before the construction of the stadium began, the district was a hub of sports. It was one of the best grounds in the state, providing the youths with opportunities to indulge in various sports activities and also serving as a place for community gatherings.
