Deputy Chairman of the NGO Dorjee K Thungon received the award on behalf of Garung Thuk on January 26 last. India Reading Olympiad (IRO) is a platform which enables, encourages and endorses an ecosystem to create active reading spaces & encourage the joy of reading and appreciates efforts towards igniting a reading revolution across 13 categories. The three broad objectives of IRO are to encourage reading habits, encourage and appreciate individuals, groups & institutions which promote reading and inspire everyone to become lifelong readers & book lovers. Out of 13 categories, this year 349 nominations across 12 categories were received and under the 13th Category alone which is “Joy of Reflection-Book Reviews”, 63 schools participated from all over India, with 3,748 entries in 7 languages.
Garung Thuk Community Library Shergaon was formed in 2014 as a result of the coming together of young like-minded tribal people from various fields with vision to work for sustainable village development and the organisation’s activities touch every aspect of rural life like education, health, art and culture, eco-tourism and bio-diversity conservation etc.
The library now has gathered sufficient books from individuals and other helpful organisations and there are further plans to establish small library units in each school in the village especially targeting the government run schools. The next plan would be to motivate the mothers to bring their children to the library to inculcate reading habits.
