Bomdila, Feb 22: The Department of Public Health Engineering and Water Supply (PHE&WS), West Kameng District today celebrated the “100% saturation of Har Ghar Jal” under Jal Jeevan Mission in the district. The celebration was held at Kameng Club Bomdila and attended by MLAs of Bomdila and Dirang – Dongru Siongju and Phurpa Tsering respectively. Both legislators congratulated the PHE&WS department on the successful saturation of “Har Ghar Jal”, and lauded the steps towards development, being taken by the government under the leadership of CM Pema Khandu and PM Narendra Modi.
Citing examples of how unsustainable water use and negligence of catchment areas has led to water woes in hill stations like Darjeeling and Kalimpong, MLA Tsering said “We must not let a similar fate befall Bomdila Township. While “Har Ghar Jal” has been achieved the focus must now shift towards sustainability of catchment areas, responsible use and clean water supply.”
MLA Siongju encouraged PRI members and officers at the village level to spread awareness and educate the Gaon Buras on protection of catchment areas, who would in turn ensure passage of customary laws to eliminate deforestation while at the same time conducting social service once a month to ensure non pollution of water resources.
Powerpoint on recently approved Operation and Maintenance Policy and recently enacted Protection of Drinking Water Catchment Area Act, 2013 were presented by Er. Dani Lampung (EE, Dirang) and Er. Tung Sono (AE, Dirang) respectively, helping the audience understand the nuances of water regulations in the state.
Er. Niapung Konia (EE-Cum-Member Secretary, DWSM) administered the Pledge for Protecting ‘Har Ghar Jal’ water & Awareness generation, while also giving a brief on the prototype of Rain water harvesting.
Hage Tarung, ADC (HQ) lauded the work done by the department and that the celebration event ensured every attendee walked out a more informed and responsible citizen. DIPRO
