PASIGHAT, Apr 23: With no help from government despite repeated pleas, the villagers of Kongkul village under Mebo sub-division of East Siang district have taken the task of building an embankment themselves.
Kongkul village is one of the worst flash flood-hit village under Mebo sub-division of East Siang district and keeping in view of the ensuing monsoon, the people of the village in collaboration with Siang Eco-System Environment Protection and Nature Group (SEEANG) carried out a major flood control/diversion work in traditional style today. The construction work will continue for few more days before it is completed, one of the villagers said.
Acknowledging the effort, more villages from the said sub-division is expected to join the work soon. Meanwhile, considering the selfless efforts of villagers, the Deputy Commissioner of East Siang, ADC, and community-based organizations also reached the spot to encourage the villagers. They also assured to extend all possible help as soon as possible.
