ITANAGAR, May 16: In a significant step towards alleviating traffic congestion, two new multi-storey parking facilities near the ESS Sector and Ganga APST bus terminal have been made functional on a trial basis starting today. These state-of-the-art parking lots, constructed at a total cost of Rs 29.5 crores, will offer free parking for the first six months of operation.
Er. Gyamar Tachung, Executive Engineer of Urban Development, Capital Complex  informed  that each facility can accommodate up to 160 vehicles simultaneously. Initiated in 2019 and completed in 2024, these projects are a part of the city's ongoing efforts to modernize and streamline urban infrastructure.
The construction costs for each project amounted to Rs 14.71 crores, covering three hydraulic car lifts and one passenger lift per facility. Both premises are equipped with advanced fire extinguisher systems and power generators to ensure safety and operational efficiency. An annual maintenance contract for the hydraulic lift machines is expected to be implemented pending government approval.
During the trial period, the Urban Development Department will oversee the operation of these facilities. A decision on whether to outsource the operations or retain them under departmental management will be made after the six-month evaluation period, added the EE.
SP Traffic Itanagar, Sepraj Perme, who inspected the new infrastructure, urged residents to utilize these parking lots to reduce congestion on the city's highways. He praised the facilities as a gift from the state government to the "smart people of the smart city of Itanagar," expressing optimism that these new additions will significantly ease parking chaos in the city's crowded market areas.
