Khonsa, May 9: Tirap police in its efforts to curb illegal contraband trade in the district has achieved a breakthrough by seizing 2.3 kg of opium from one Chumyan Lowang originally hailing from Longkhong village under Deomali PS.
The woman presently staying at Udyog Colony in Deomali was intercepted at the Deomali check gate and after searching her bag, opium smeared in cloth weighing approx 2.3 kg was recovered by OC Deomali and his team. The seizure was conducted in presence of the Magistrate and a case vide DML PS C/No.04/20 U/S 18(C) of NDPS Act has been registered against her and others and further investigation is on.
During preliminary investigation it revealed that the opium was delivered to her by one Sentoi Hodong alias Nokfoit of Noklo village under Lazu PO/PS en route to Dibrugarh. It further revealed that Hodong who was playing the role of a peddler of the said contraband had hired an ambulance to go to Dibrugarh under pretext of medical reasons. After crossing the Hukanjuri check gate he told the driver to go towards Deomali as he needed to collect some money for medical expenses and just near the Deomali bridge met Chumyan as per prearrangement and delivered the bag containing opium.
Tirap SP Kardak Riba while issuing warning to the district’s law breakers has appealed not to use ambulance or any government vehicle in unlawful activities. “When the frontline health workers and police are working 24x7 to contain the pandemic, crimes by some anti-social elements using such methods will discourage the frontline warriors,” SP said.
The newly posted DIG (TCL) Kime Kaming has appreciated OC Deomali PS and his team who achieved the success under leadership of SP Tirap. DIPRO
