ITANAGAR, Feb 22: A day after all members of the Pan Arunachal Joint Steering Committee (PAJSC) were released following their detention ahead of the Statehood Day, Superintendent of Police-Itanagar Region, Rohit Rajbir Singh(IPS) clarified the detention was a preventive measure. This action was taken in light of potential disturbances anticipated during Statehood Day celebrations and a VVIP visit to the state capital, said the SP.
Singh stated that six individuals were detained based on intelligence regarding possible disruptions during the significant event. Following this, the Deputy Commissioner of the Capital Region ordered judicial custody under Sections 107/151 of the CrPc for 24 hours, which allows the police to arrest individuals without a warrant if they're aware of plans to commit a cognizable offence.
Regarding specific incidents, Singh disclosed that Techi Puru and Hage Butung were charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code like 186, 353,332,334 and 336 for allegedly obstructing and causing harm to on-duty police officers. However, he clarified that currently, no member of the PAJSC remain in judicial custody or detention.
Singh emphasized that peaceful protests, such as wearing black badges, are permissible, but any attempt to disrupt events would not be tolerated. He asserted that there were concerns about certain individuals within the PAJSC intending to disrupt the VVIP visit and Statehood Day celebrations with undisclosed motives.
