ITANAGAR, Apr 29:The State Election Commission has decided to cancel the Municipal Election for Itanagar and Pasighat Municipalities in view of the approaching monsoon season.

The State Election Commission on April 20 had announced May 29 next as the date of Municipality elections for Itanagar Municipal Council and Pasighat Municipal Council results of which will be announced on May 31 next.

In a release to media today, the SEC informed that the decision was taken after the state government in a letter on April 23 last submitted that the election has been announced during monsoon season when the chances of landslides and natural disaster are quite high and requested for deferment of election.

Basing on the submission of the state government, the SEC sought reports from the Deputy Commissioners-Cum-Municipal Election Officers of Itanagar and Pasighat Municipalities regarding the same and after receiving feedback regarding the challenges of holding the election as per scheduled programme during the rainy season, the Commission has decided to cancel the election schedule announced on April 20 last.
