Guwahati, Jun 8: A two-day national seminar on the theme ‘Media Representation of Northeast India: Looking Back and Looking Forward’ was organized jointly by the Departments of Mass Communication of Rajiv Gandhi University and Saint Claret College, Ziro here at Don Bosco Institute on June 7 & 8.
The seminar is sponsored by Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development (RGNIYD), Sriperumbudur, DIPR, Government of Arunachal Pradesh and Thekar, the first  RNI registered Karbi daily  from Diphu. RGU Vice Chancellor Professor Saket Kushwaha opined that it is entirely a matter of hypothesis and personal perception whether the Northeast media is being marginalized or not and although it can be debated if media has lost its edge as an effective influencer on pertinent issues, by and large it has played a balanced role. Stating that media is the 4th pillar of democracy, he also questioned if the other three pillars are willing to grab the serious inputs from media and employ them in the policy making process. Appreciating the skills of students in writing articles, he also encouraged them on spreading the horizon of Mass Communication department. RGNIYD Professor Dr. Inderjeet Singh Sodhi while appreciating the theme said that he has  deep affection for Northeast and its people and it is good to see media playing positive role in social development of the region.
Keynote speaker and noted journalist Ruben Banerjee, currently the Editor in Chief of Outlook recalled his early days in the profession when he spent a considerable period of time in Northeast, Odisha and Bangladesh. Commenting on the seminar’s theme, he said there can always be debate on the issue, but Northeast youths are making marvellous contributions to the media industry and it’s a wrong conception that mainland media is inimical to the region. The intention and motive of the media cannot be questioned because the best of the ability is being put, he added.
A total of 54 research scholars are attending the seminar with their papers on various sub-themes. News desk
