ITANAGAR, Apr 20:

The State Election Commission on Friday announced May 29 next as the date for Municipality elections of Itanagar Municipal Council and Pasighat Municipal Council results of which will be announced on May 31next.

Nomination papers would be scrutinized on May 10 and the last date for withdrawal of candidatures has been fixed on May 14. The entire election process would be wrapped up by June 7.

 

Addressing press reporters here today, State Election Commissioner, Hage Kojeen further informed thatother details regarding the elections will be notified on May 1 and the last date for filing nominations will be on May 8.

 

“Model Code of Conduct will come into force from the date of announcement,” asserted the SEC adding that he has already directed the Municipal Election Officers/Returning Officers to hold meetings with political parties and candidates to clarify  any doubts about various statutory requirements that they need to fulfil and observe.

 

Meanwhile, speaking on the status of Panchayati Raj election, Kojeen while informing that the Government is ‘yet to specify a fresh date,’ affirmed there would be a “constitutional crisis” once the expiry dates are over.

 

Dwelling further on this, Kojeen informed that, earlier in January this year, the Commission had moved the proposal for conducting the Panchayat Election with the government. However, with no response forthcoming, the Commission again wrote to the Chief Minister and further sent a reminder.

 

He however clarified that in response to the letter, the government clarified its inability to conduct the Panchayat election citing need for more time for further modification in amendments in earlier prevalent 3-Tier System to newly amended 2-Tier Panchayati Raj System.

 

The current term of the Itanagar Municipal Council, which has 30 Wards with 64799 electors and 56 Polling Stations and the Pasighat Municipal Council which has 12 Wards with 9646 electors and 12 Polling Stations, are expiring on May 31 next.
