CHONGKHAM, Apr 11:

The residents in several areas of Chongkham have strongly voiced against the raising of the height of road in Chongkham-Tezu road constructed by Navayuga Engineering Company Limited (NECL) and has urged to re-laid the road in the interest of the local people. The area is prone to flood and residents of area are worst sufferer as annually during the rainy season their areas get flooded.

“Due to unnecessary increase in the height of Alubari road the situation will get worse as it would lead to spill-over of rainwater to adjacent low-lying areas. The increase in the height of Alubari road will only make the surrounding areas more prone to water logging and flooding in the event of heavy rain. It is pertinent to mention that during the year 2004 the Chongkham area was the worst affected by the flood water in the entire Namsai district,” said a local resident.

The local legislator cum parliamentary secretary for environment and forest CT Mein has informed that the constructing agency never took local people into confidence before executing the work in Alubari. They should have consulted locals before laying the road or increasing its height, he said. Most of the houses roof tops are now at the level of the road constructed by the constructing agency. Their inept planning, poor drainage, lack of monitoring of road laying work will be the main reasons for flooding in his area in the event of rain, added CT Mein.

This road is unnecessarily too high and is already causing great difficulties to the residents. This road will block the whole water of the river in case of a big flood and submerge us. It is my observation right from the beginning that Navayuga led by its present project manager does not bother to take the local people and myself in confidence in designing this road, he added.

“Road level going up is not good for home-owners and residents. The ground or the plot goes beneath the road level. Rainwater and slush will enter homes and damage household items,” the MLA said.

If the road is to be re-laid than the agency must ensure that the level of the road remains the same even after fresh construction as it was earlier. He said constructing agency must ensure and keep a vigil on road re-laying to ensure the height is not more than the plinth height of houses.
