Aalo, May 15: Nyili Lomi of Kabu village of West Siang district has shown how proper training and business acumen can change the life of an ordinary farmer and usher in great economic prosperity.
Lomi, who is a progressive farmer started stevia cultivation after getting trained on modern agricultural and horticultural practices at College of Horticultural and Forestry, Pasighat at the initiatives of the Divisional Forest Officer Aalo, Abhinav Kumar. Since then, Lomi hasn’t looked back and is now the proud owner of the farm named M/S Lomi Enterprise. He disclosed that he has plans for extensive growth in coming years and also give training to people of the district free of cost in his farm so that stevia is grown widely by the marginal farmers as an effective and self-sustaining income avenue.
The firm he owns which stretches over a hectare of land displays a mix of organic rotary cash crop farming, organic manufacturing of turmeric, mushroom cultivation, packaged organic, liquid fertilizer, organic insecticides cum manure, fish farming, bamboo plantation, banana farming and three ponds with fish farming.The hybrid cucumber plantations also fetches a good monthly income.
Stevia is fast becoming commercially important as it is replacing the chemical sweetener and can be safely used in herbal medicines, tonic for diabetics patient, stomach ulcers and as ingredients in mouthwashes, toothpastes etc.
DFO visited Lomi on May 14 last and encouraged him to keep the momentum going and set an example for other farmers of the district to emulate. DIPRO
