ITANAGAR, Apr 18:

The Arunachal Pradesh Union of Working Journalists (APUWJ), the Arunachal Press Club and the Arunachal Electronic Media Association (AEMA) have strongly condemned the attack on the residence of the editor of The Shillong Times newspaper.

According to reports, two unidentified persons hurled a petrol bomb at Patricia Mukhim’s residence in Shillong’s Umpling area on Tuesday evening. No one was injured in the attack.

The motive of attack is yet to be ascertained. However, it is assumed that the fiery editor was targeted for her hard-hitting writing on many issues.

Expressing solidarity with Mukhim and the press fraternity of Meghalaya, the press bodies here urged the law enforcement authority in Shillong to nab the perpetrators at the earliest.

“It was a cowardly attempt to muzzle the freedom of the press, but it will not be able to silence the press. The Arunachal press bodies condemn it in the strongest terms,” the press bodies said in a joint statement.

They also expressed concern over the hostile atmosphere in which journalists in the Northeast region have to work nowadays.
