ITANAGAR, May 25:The People's Party of Arunachal convened a meeting today to discuss the implications of Arunachal Pradesh (Land Settlement and Records) (Amendment) Act, 2018 which was passed on 7 May 2018.

In the meeting, the participating members raised strong objection over the new amendment made in the Bill by which non-APSTs can obtain land on lease for 30 years which can be extended up to another 33 years later.

Stating that the move will cause detrimental effects to the people of Arunachal, an executive member of PPA alleged that “This way, rich outsiders can become indirect owners of our state. It is harmful for our future generations as Arunachalis are innocent and can be duped by the misuse of this Act”.

The PPA also flayed the government for increasing the land revenue rate from 5 rupees to 1000 rupees per square meter and slammed the BJP government for not taking views and opinions of the public before passing this amendment in the assembly.

Seeking immediate intervention of Arunachal Indigenous Tribes' Forum (AITF) and Arunachal Pradesh Women Welfare Society (APWWS), the PPA said, ‘we want to know their stand because when women are not given the right to inherit land, how outsiders can be given land on lease in Arunachal for so many decades.’
