ITANAGAR, Mar 8: The People's Party of Arunachal (PPA), the lone regional party from the state, on Friday, announced their alliance with the BJP government under the umbrella of North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) for the ensuing assembly and Lok Sabha elections 2024.
The party election manifesto-2024 was also released on the day.
Addressing the media at the press club, PPA general secretary Kaling Jerang said the party was formed during the 70s with the prime motive to work for regional development and voice regional issues. With the passage of time and transition in political approach, the PPA felt the need to reshape according to the times.  Therefore, the decision for the alliance with the BJP under NEDA was necessary.
He said another reason why the PPA decided to go along with the BJP alliance is because of the defection of party MLA towards the ruling regime. Moreover, the anti-defection law has been a big bluff in safeguarding the interest of any political party.
Jerang said that the PPA has been the victim of the anti-defection law. Every election, the party comes up with PPA legislators but at the end they merge with the ruling state government. Now, the anti-defection law can’t control it.
“Therefore, after several discussions and suggestions from various corners, the party decided to remodel the approach to contest in the assembly and Lok Sabha elections,” he said, adding that the party wants to contribute towards the development and growth of the state by being in the ruling government.
Subsequently, the PPA members recently met with the NEDA Convenor and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma and are all set to go for the polls under the ambit of NEDA.
“Now with the alliance with the BJP party, the legislators from the party won’t need to defect,” he added.
He also appealed to the public of the state to understand the reasons why the lone regional party decided on an alliance with the BJP government under NEDA.
Responding to the reports about detachment among the PPA, Jerang said the news is correct. However, with the help of the judiciary, the matter has been resolved. And, now the present PPA is being headed by the party president, Khafa Bengia.
He said that the party earlier had both Chairman and President, which ultimately created division among the members. By the decision of the court, a new amendment was made to discontinue the post of Chairman. And now, the executive head will be the party President.
Jerang also informed that in a couple of days, the party will form a committee in regard to the issuance of party tickets.
