ITANAGAR, Feb 13: Philanthropist-turned-politician Dr. Taba Nirmali passed away today.
She was the first Nyishi woman MBBS graduate in the year 1988 and soon joined government service as a medical officer. Being a dedicated philanthropist, she had converted her own private residence into a private hospital, first of its kind in the state, during the time when the health sector in the state was insufficient to cover the needs of the people. She founded NIBA hospital in 1999 along with fellow founders Dr. M. Jini( Director TRIHMS) and Dr. Smti, Bengia Mala.
Following the death of her elder sister due to cancer in 1999, she later co- founded the Arunachal Cancer Society, as General Secretary along with Dr. K.K. Dey as Chairman and Dr Moji Jini as fellow co-founder. She also started the Smile Train project in her hospital which till date has provided free cleft palate surgery to more than 600 people in need.
Dr. Nirmali opted for voluntary retirement in 2011 and contested from 16th Yachuli assembly constituency in 2014. She was later appointed as BJP state secretary. She also served as Chairperson of Arunachal Pradesh State Women Commission for a brief period.
She is survived by her Husband, Er. Taba Tedir, Retd CE and Director Urban Development and Housing and her three children. Her final rites will be held on February 15 at her Itanagar residence.
