Changlang, Jun 16: Based on specific intelligence inputs regarding the presence of a top NSCN(R) Commander in Chokdok in Changlang district, the Changlang Battalion of Assam Rifles under the aegis of its Hq 25 Sector on Tuesday apprehended the cadre after a swift operation.
A 0.1x Burmese-made 0.22 mm pistol along with 5 rounds of ammunition was also recovered from the cadre, currently under Changlang PS custody. He has been identified as SS Sgt Major Monpi Mamai, allegedly responsible for forceful extortion and several other anti-national activities. Reportedly, he was recently appointed as the Changlang Town Commander after the apprehension of SS Sgt Maj Chingmon Mamai. The Changlang battalion of Assam Rifles has stepped up its operations in the area after several cases of extortion and other unlawful activities surfaced.
It is viewed that this arrest will dilute the activities and aspirations of the NSCN (R) faction and will bring relief to the local population. Meanwhile, Assam Rifles has reaffirmed to stand by its motto of ‘Friends of the Hill People’. DIPRO
