NEW DELHI,Jun 16: NITI Aayog has targeted to set up 1500 Atal Tinkering Labs, ATLs by the end of this year in schools across the country to impart innovation skills in the students.
Briefing the media in New Delhi, NITI Aayog's Chief Executive Officer Amitabh Kant said more than 450 schools have been selected from 32 States and Union Territories through a competitive process for setting up ATLs.
Atal Innovation Mission, AIM will provide grant in aid for selected schools that includes a one time establishment cost of 10 lakh rupees and operational expenses of 10 lakh rupees for a maximum period of five year.
He said ATLs are dedicated work spaces for class 6th to 12th students to acquire innovation skills, develop ideas and build prototypes using state of the art equipment like 3D printer, robtics and electronics development tools.
Mr Kant said, the activities in these labs are designed to spur the spark of creativity in students and go beyond regular curriculum and text book learning.
He said, to maximize the impact of the ATLs, AIM will soon be launching Mentor India - a strategic nation building initiative to engage leaders who can guide and mentor students in the ATLs.
