ITANAGAR, Mar 6: After an 8-day long agitation and hunger strike by students of Northeastern Regional Institute of Science and Technology (NERIST), the Government of India today appointed one of the institutes professor in Chemistry Dr HS Yadav as the new director of the deemed University. However, the Ministry of Human Resource Development failed to please the students with this development.

The development came in the midst of the silent foot march being organized to protest against the lackadaisical attitude of the MHRD for non appointment of regular director from its NERIST campus, Nirjuli to Raj Bhawan, Itanagar.

Earlier security personnel led by Superintendent of Police Sagar Singh Kalsi also tried to halt the silent foot march from going forward in Naharlagun, however after assurance from the students to refrain any kind of violence, the SP allowed the students to take their route to IG Park. However the march was called off after news of appointment of Dr Yadav as new Director spread.

While reacting strongly to the development, President Students Union of NERIST (SUN) Banta Natung claimed it a very disheartening decision from the MHRD as their demands was to appoint a new Director from outside the campus.

‘No one is happy here literally we have failed in our mission for a new director,’ added Natung while terming the whole episode as politically motivated.

Natung, also asserted that the newly appointed Director was already empowered as in-charge Director and if reports are to be believed was lobbying in Delhi for the same post. We are shocked and totally against this decision as Dr Yadav was sacked by MHRD earlier from the same post but now again he has been reappointed, he said.

‘Why  is the MHRD having problem with appointing new Director,’ slammed  President SUN while appealing MoS Kiren Rijiju   and MHRD to  reconsider the decision.

He further indicated that their agitation might continue after meeting with all the students and stakeholders as well as faculty members of NERIST.

‘We are back to square one. Dr Yadav was not the one whom we demanded. For last 7 days we have been protesting and on hunger strike for a new and fresh director who could understand the needs of this institution and bring back the lost glory of this prestigious institution,’ added another student while expressing his resentment.

It’s worth mentioning here that, student community of the state including the apex student body APPSU has supported the demands of NERIST for appointment of regular director.

AAPSU welcomes decision

ITANAGAR, Mar 6: The All Arunachal Pradesh Student’s Union (AAPSU) has welcomed the decision to appointment a new Director for NERIST by union MHRD ministry. AAPSU hoped that with the appointment of Dr HS Yadav the academic atmosphere and administration of the campus will regain its lost glory.

The Union also extended its gratitude to all who stood with the student’s fraternity in their endeavour and weeklong struggle to save the glory of the premier institute in demanding for appointment of a new Director.

AAPSU at the same time congratulated the entire student community of NERIST under the aegis of SUN for their steadfast determination and resilience in carrying out there protest. Further, the union also reminded the new director Dr HS Yadav regarding the enormity of the situation and his manifold responsibility on being anointed as the Director of the premier educational institute after lot of hue and cry.
