ITANAGAR, Jun 21: At a time when the Covid frontline warriors are giving their best to thwart the rise of Covid-19 cases in the state, a few sanitation workers engaged in the North Eastern Institute of Folk Medicine (NEIFM) are facing untold financial hardship due to non-receipt of salary for three months.
As per reports, these sanitation workers were recruited on a temporary basis by the East Siang District Administration specifically for the Covid Care Centre at NEIFM and despite the DA’s assurance, they are yet to receive their salary for three months. “We have been engaged as sanitation workers especially for Covid-19 in CCC and are working here since March last,” informed one of the workers, thanking the administration for giving the opportunity to serve the people during the pandemic. “But since we are without salary consecutively for three months, it is becoming increasingly difficult for us and our families to survive,” he lamented. When contacted, East Siang DC Kinny Singh while informing that she wasn’t aware of it, stated that the pending salaries will be released by June 22 and necessary directions have been given to the District Medical Officer in this regard.
As per agreement, temporary sanitation workers recruited for the Covid Care Centre will be given a consolidated salary of Rs 10,000 per month for three months only to be borne by the District Administration/District Health Service. Accordingly, two sanitation workers and one washerman were appointed on March last and two additional workers were engaged recently. Currently, East Siang has 5 active Covid-19 cases and after full recovery, four were released on Sunday for follow-up home quarantine.
