RONO HILLS, Mar 27:A two day national seminar on role of CBOs and NGOs in emerging rural transformation scenario was inaugurated at Rajiv Gandhi University today. The seminar is being jointly organised by NIRD & PR Guwahati regional Centre and NSS Cell and Department of Social Work RGU with the focus on providing a platform to the practitioners, scholars, government officers and academicians to share and assess the challenges faced by NGOs & CBOs in rural development.

The inaugural programme was attended by Prof OK Panigrahi Head Department of Political Science as Chief guest and Ashwin Kumar Senior Academic consultant NCRI as guest of honour. Prof RM Pant Director NIRD introduced the various themes of the seminar and highlighted the objective of organising the seminar.

Ms. Jarjum Ete, Chief Advisor Arunachal Pradesh Women Welfare Society delivered the keynote address during the inaugural programme, wherein she shared her myriad experiences as a social activist and challenges she faced while endeavouring to ameliorate maladies as faced by the people of north eastern in general and Arunachal in particular.

She highlighted that in present scenario the issues and challenges as faced by society for harmonious and equitable growth is getting complicated with each passing day. The rural areas are affected most adversely in present times as such she stressed that the role of CBOs and NGOs become all the more important and vital.

She highlighted that role of the three organisations namely Arunachal Pradesh Women Welfare Society (APWWS), All Arunachal Pradesh Student Union (AAPSU) and Arunachal indigenous Tribal Forum (AITF) is very important for addressing and clinching the issues which concerns the people most. She informed the participants of the seminar that the rural school children are having poor proficiency in reading and writing english which in turn affects them in their ability to understand subjects like science and mathematics thereby seriously affecting their learning abilities. Therefore, she stressed that education sector has to be focussed by CBOs and NGOs in the right earnest. 

While, Mr.Ashwin Kumar in his brief speech shared about the efforts that is being taken up by NCRI in curriculum development with focus on rural community engagement. He informed that the NGOs and CBOs can leverage their efforts of rural development through funds which are made available through corporate social responsibility. Prof.P.K.Panigrahi in his speech highlighted about the role NGOs and CBOs can play in ameliorating the rural development paradigm. However, he stressed that NGOs have to be grounded to their objectives of non-profit making foundation.

John Gangmei, Dr. Ravi Ranjan, Dr.K.P Singh and Gomar Basar along with students of Social work department are coordinating the various sessions of the national seminar. Altogether around 35 research papers will be presented and discussed upon during the two days national workshop.
